چکیده

We present a study of the coarse-graining of polymers into bead-spring chains using statistical mechanics. The force–extension behavior is examined at different levels of coarse-graining. A direct result of the springs being decoupled is that the force–extension behavior depends only on the number of flexibility lengths (e.g. persistence or Kuhn lengths) represented by each spring. This dimensionless parameter is found to govern the fluctuations around the mean extension, analogous to the conventional role of temperature. The use of an effective flexibility length to correct the model behavior is analyzed, and we have calculated bounds on the choices of this correction factor. The analytic nature of the statistical mechanical framework has also allowed for the calculation of asymptotic and universal behavior. The zero Weissenberg number rheological b s i c l d ©

Coarse-graining intramolecular hydrodynamic interaction in dilute solutions of flexible polymers.

We present a scheme for coarse-graining hydrodynamic interactions in an isolated flexible homopolymer molecule in solution. In contrast to the conventional bead-spring model that employs spherical beads of fixed radii to represent the hydrodynamic characteristics of coarse-grained segments, we show that our procedure leads naturally to a discrete model of a polymer molecule as a chain of orient...

Dissipative particle dynamics simulations of polymer chains: scaling laws and shearing response compared to DNA experiments.

Dissipative particle dynamics simulations of several bead-spring representations of polymer chains in dilute solution are used to demonstrate the correct static scaling laws for the radius of gyration. Shear flow results for the wormlike chain simulating single DNA molecules compare well with average extensions from experiments, irrespective of the number of beads. However, coarse graining with...

Resolving Dynamic Properties of Polymers through Coarse-Grained Computational Studies.

Coupled length and time scales determine the dynamic behavior of polymers and underlie their unique viscoelastic properties. To resolve the long-time dynamics it is imperative to determine which time and length scales must be correctly modeled. Here we probe the degree of coarse graining required to simultaneously retain significant atomistic details and access large length and time scales. The...

Parametrization of Chain Molecules in Dissipative Particle Dynamics.

This paper presents a consistent strategy for parametrization of coarse-grained models of chain molecules in dissipative particle dynamics (DPD), where the soft-core DPD interaction parameters are fitted to the activities in solutions of reference compounds that represent different fragments of target molecules. The intercomponent parameters are matched either to the infinite dilution activity ...

Development of bead-spring polymer models using the constant extension ensemble

We have examined a new method for generating coarse-grained models of polymers. The resulting models consist of bead-spring chains with the spring force law taken from the force-extension behavior in the constant extension ensemble. This method, called the polymer ensemble transformation method, is applied to the freely jointed chain. The resulting model illustrates why current bead-spring chai...
